Find a Dentist in Tasmania

203 dental practices in Tasmania are listed on Find a Dentist.

Tasmania had an estimated 580,700 residents at 31 March 2026. With most people living around Hobart, Launceston and the north-west coast, the right dentist is often the one you can get to easily, at a time that works for you.

Describe what you need in the search above, for example “family dentist in Kingston” or “dentures, Launceston, pension card”. The guide below explains public dental care in Tasmania, children’s dental care and emergencies.

Finding a dentist in Tasmania

Private practices provide most dental care in Tasmania, alongside the state’s public Oral Health Services. If you are not eligible for public care, compare private practices on location, availability, services and how they explain your options.

If you live outside the main centres, ask whether the practice can group appointments to reduce travel, and how follow-up care works.

Public dental care in Tasmania

The Tasmanian Department of Health’s Oral Health Services provides:

  • Dental care for children and teenagers under 18 who have a current Medicare card. Children can still be seen if CDBS is not available or has been used.
  • Dental care for adults who are the primary holder of a current Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card. Non-urgent care may involve a wait.

To book or ask about eligibility, call Oral Health Services Tasmania on 1300 011 013.

Medicare, health funds and payment options

For private care, most dental treatment is not covered by Medicare; private health insurance extras may help.

Ask any practice for a written estimate, whether your health fund can be claimed on the day, and whether payment plans are available. Our search can look for practices that list payment plans.

Kids’ dental care and CDBS in Tasmania

Tasmanian children under 18 with a Medicare card can use Oral Health Services. Separately, families who receive certain government payments may use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule at a private practice that accepts it.

Benefits apply over two consecutive calendar years. It does not cover orthodontic or cosmetic work.

Dental emergencies in Tasmania

Call 000 for swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to the face or head.

For other urgent dental problems, contact a dental practice early in the day and say it is urgent. If you are eligible for public care, call Oral Health Services Tasmania on 1300 011 013; urgent problems are prioritised. For health advice at any hour, call healthdirect on 1800 022 222.

Checking a dentist’s registration

Every dentist, dental hygienist, oral health therapist, dental therapist and dental prosthetist practising in Australia must be registered. You can check any practitioner on the Ahpra Register of practitioners by name or registration number; the register also shows any conditions on their registration.

In Australia the title “specialist” is protected. The Dental Board of Australia recognises 13 dental specialties, such as orthodontics and endodontics, and titles like “orthodontist” may only be used by dentists with specialist registration in that field. If a practice describes a dentist as a specialist, you can confirm it on the Ahpra register. Find a Dentist does not describe practitioners as specialists unless that registration has been checked.

What to ask before you book

  • Are you accepting new patients?
  • Can you explain my treatment options before we start?
  • Do you accept the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?
  • Do you have experience helping anxious patients?
  • What should I do if I have a problem after hours?

How Find a Dentist matches you

We do not show star ratings or reviews, and we cannot give dental or medical advice. Please do not enter personal details such as your name, phone number or Medicare number.
