Find a Dentist in South Australia
711 dental practices in South Australia are listed on Find a Dentist.
South Australia had an estimated 1.92 million residents at 31 March 2026, most of them in greater Adelaide. Whether you are looking for a family dentist close to school, a practice open on Saturdays or help with an urgent problem, it helps to know how SA Dental and private practices fit together.
Use the search above to describe what you need, for example “dentist near Prospect, payment plans” or “nervous patient, Glenelg”. The information below covers public dental eligibility, children’s care and what to do in an emergency.
Finding a dentist in South Australia
Most South Australians who are not eligible for public care see a private dentist. When you compare practices, consider travel time, appointment availability, the services you need and how treatment options are explained.
If you have a health condition, take a list of your medicines to your first visit and tell the practice about anything that worries you. A good first appointment should leave you clear about your options.
SA Dental: who can attend
SA Dental is the state’s public dental service. According to SA Dental:
- All children and young people under 18 can access dental care at SA Dental clinics, and there are no waiting lists for general dental care for children.
- Adults (18 and over) who live in South Australia and hold a current Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card can attend. Adult dependants aged 18–21 listed on the card can also attend; a partner listed on a card needs their own card.
- SA Dental does not accept the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card or Department of Veterans’ Affairs cards for adult eligibility.
Waiting times apply for eligible adults. Call SA Dental on 1300 008 222 or contact your closest clinic.
Medicare, health funds and payment options
For private care, most dental treatment is not covered by Medicare, and private health insurance extras may help.
Ask practices for a written estimate, whether they can claim your health fund on the spot, and whether they offer payment plans. Our search can look for practices that list these options.
Children’s dental care and CDBS
SA Dental recommends children have a first dental check-up at around 12 months of age, and all under-18s can use SA Dental clinics.
Families who receive certain government payments may also use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) at public or private practices. Benefits apply over two consecutive calendar years. It does not cover orthodontic or cosmetic work.
Dental emergencies in South Australia
Call 000 for facial swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to the face or head.
For eligible patients, SA Dental says to call your closest clinic during business hours (8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday) and, outside those hours, to call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. Adults need a current Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card to be seen for emergency care at SA Dental. If you are not eligible, contact a private practice and explain that it is urgent.
Checking a dentist’s registration
Every dentist, dental hygienist, oral health therapist, dental therapist and dental prosthetist practising in Australia must be registered. You can check any practitioner on the Ahpra Register of practitioners by name or registration number; the register also shows any conditions on their registration.
In Australia the title “specialist” is protected. The Dental Board of Australia recognises 13 dental specialties, such as orthodontics and endodontics, and titles like “orthodontist” may only be used by dentists with specialist registration in that field. If a practice describes a dentist as a specialist, you can confirm it on the Ahpra register. Find a Dentist does not describe practitioners as specialists unless that registration has been checked.
Questions to ask a new practice

- Can I get an estimate in writing before treatment?
- How do you support people who are anxious about dental visits?
- Is there parking or step-free access?
- What should I do if I have a problem when you are closed?
